Expect your Corgi Basset Hound to be a medium-sized dog with short legs and a long tail. Corgi Bassets will have upright, pointy, rounded ears like the Pembroke Welsh Corgi or long, floppy ears like the Basset Hound – the latter is more likely.
You can expect the Pembroke Welsh Corgi to be most present in the Corgi Basset’s face, though its mouth may be slightly wider and snout somewhat larger than the traditional Pembroke Welsh.

The History of the Basset Hound
The Basset Hound was first described in France in 1585 in an illustrated hunting guide, “La Venerie,” by Jacques de Foullioux. However, the Basset Hound is descended from St. Hubert of Belgium – a Church saint who kept “St. Hubert Hounds” as his hunting dogs.
Basset Hounds have long been used as hunting dogs, becoming favored by French nobility throughout the centuries and eventually winding up as the favorite of Napoleon III, Emperor of France, from 1852 to 1870. Ten years after Napoleon’s abdication, the International Dog Show held in Paris would be where the Basset Hounds would draw international attention.
Short-haired Basset Hounds were bred in France continuously from 1870 onwards, and other breeding practices of Basset Hounds produced a straight-legged type known as the Basset Artésien Normand.
The Basset Artésien Normand was then transported to the UK and used to breed with bloodhounds to create the modern British version of the Basset Hound.
How Popular Are Basset Hounds?
Basset Hounds are moderately popular in the United States and primarily well-liked for their laissez-faire approach to life and relaxed, calm temperament.
Basset Hounds were first brought to the United States in the early 19th century, where they were used as hunting dogs for small game, such as rabbits. They are still employed as hunting dogs in some parts of the United States today, although they’re more commonly companion pets.
In 2021, Basset Hounds ranked as the 34th most popular dog in the United States, according to the American Kennel Club.
Unfortunately, the American Kennel Club doesn’t recognize the Basset Artésien Normand.
Who Are Basset Hounds a Good Dog For?
Basset Hounds generally make fantastic family dogs. They’re typically too big for apartment living and thus require a house & yard setup to be optimally happy. Basset Hounds are gentle pets and good with other pets and children, making them a good choice for those with kids.
Though they look cumbersome, Basset Hounds are a moderate energy breed, meaning that they’ll still require at least once a day, but they won’t run you to oblivion.
How Did Basset Hounds Come About?
Basset Hounds were first illustrated in 1585 in a French hunting magazine by Jacques de Foullioux. Basset Hounds have long been used as hunting dogs throughout the centuries and were prized dogs of Napoleon III, the last emperor of France.
In 1870, Basset Hounds were imported to England and bred with Bloodhounds to create the English Basset Hound.
When Did First Cross-Breed The Basset Hound?
Basset Hounds have been crossbred for centuries. The first famous instance of crossbreeding was likely when the Basset Artésien Normand was created.
Other popular crossbreeds of the Basset Hound have been the Basset Griffon Vendeen, the Basset Hound Labrador mix, the Basset Hound Beagle mix (also known as Bagel Hounds), and of course, our beloved Corgi Basset Mix.
The History of the Corgi
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi was first brought to English shores by Flemish weavers in 1107 A.D. The weavers were searching for a new home and settled in Pembrokeshire, Wales. Initially, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi was used as a herding dog. Despite its small size, it would nip at the heels of the cattle and be used successfully.
Pembroke Welsh Corgis have a cousin – the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. It’s believed this breed was developed from the Welsh Corgis that came over with Flemish weavers who settled in Carmarthen, Wales. They have a slightly different physical appearance than the Pembroke Welsh. The breeds were grouped together in 1925 when the Kennel Club in England recognized them. But lovers of the Cardigan Welsh Corgi eventually petitioned successfully for them to be shown, categorized, and recorded as separate breeds.
Pembroke Welsh Corgis have outgrown their Welsh Corgi cousin in popularity and were even the favorite dogs of Queen Elizabeth II and the Queen Mother. Beloved for their affectionate nature, the Queen owned more than thirty Corgis during her reign.
How Popular Are Corgis?
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi arrived on American shores in 1933 by a Corgi enthusiast. A year later, the American Kennel Club registered the Welsh Corgis (Pembroke & Cardigan) as a single breed. It would take an extra year for the AKC to correct the record.
Unfortunately for the Cardigan Welsh, the Pembroke Welsh far outstrips it in popularity terms. In 2021, the Cardigan Welsh was the 67th most popular dog breed in the United States. Meanwhile, the Pembroke Welsh ranked as the 11th most popular.
Who Are Corgis a Good Dog For?
Corgis are well-known for their likability and friendly personality. They have a moderate energy level and are an intelligent breed requiring mental stimulation during play – playing fetch – for example!
Corgis are relatively small dogs, making them good options for the elderly and those who live in apartments. While not a barkless breed, your Corgi is unlikely to bark its head off at everything and anything.
Corgis also make lovely family pets, fitting in well with other pets and children. However, those with smaller children (under the age of five) should be wary of the Pembroke Welsh’s herding instincts, which can cause them to ‘herd’ your children. This could become a tripping hazard, so keep an eye out for it and correct it immediately.
How Did Corgis Come About?
Corgis originally came about through migration – they migrated with their original Flemish owners in the early 12th century, when Flemish weavers originally left modern-day Belgium for Wales. They settled in both Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire, Wales.
Corgis were initially used as herding dogs before becoming healthy companion pets, even going so far as to be the favorite dogs of Queen Elizabeth II.
When Did First Cross-Breed The Corgi?
The Corgi has a long history, so it’s almost impossible to narrow down when it was first crossbred. However, we know that the Corgi was likely crossbred many times throughout its history, most popularly with dogs of similar size and weight, although sometimes with smaller breeds.
The Dorgi, for example, is a cross between a Dachshund and a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. This cross was a creation of Queen Elizabeth II, who bred her Corgi with her sister, Princess Margaret’s Dachshund, to create the Dorgi.
Other crosses include the Corgi Pomeranian, Corgi German Shepherd, and Corgi Husky mix.
