The Corgi Pomeranian mix is a small mixed breed dog created by combining the Pembroke Welsh Corgi with the Pomeranian. They are also known as a Corgi Pom or Pomeranian Corgi. This designer breed isn’t particularly old and results from a desire to temper the excitable, hyperenergetic personality of the Pomeranian with the more relaxed temperament of the Pembroke Welsh Corgi.
The Corgi Pomeranian mix is an adorable mixed-breed dog and are excellent family dogs. Still, they are best suited for an experienced dog owner, as they can be a handful. Corgi Pom dogs are most famously royal dogs – having both been favorites of both Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II.

What does a Corgi Pomeranian mix look like?
As a mixed-breed dog, the Corgi Pomeranian will look a little like each of its parents. Determining its physical appearance is challenging – but we’ll give it our best shot.
Your Corgi Pomeranian will have short and floppy ears or pointed rounded ears. It will also likely have a shorter snout than the traditional Corgi snout and the wedge-shaped face of the Pomeranian.
You can expect your Corgi Pom to have short legs, like the Corgi – but critically, a fluffy tail, like the Pomeranian. Pembroke Welsh Corgis don’t have tails – unlike their Cardigan Welsh cousins.

The Corgi Pom could inherit various coat colors, including white, grey, fawn, tan, red, and sable. Your Corgi Pom may also inherit the Pomeranian’s double coat – despite being a small dog, Pomeranians stem from the German Spitz breed, which, before they became a German breed, originally came from Lapland and Iceland.
The History of the Corgi Pomeranian Mix
The history of the Corgi Pomeranian mix is a mystery. Like most designer breeds, the Corgi Pom likely appeared sometime between 1990 and the early 2000s, when crossbreeding became popular in the United States, having begun in the 1960s.
To better understand the Corgi Pom, we must explore its parent breeds to give insight into the two breeds that make up the Corgi Pom: The Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Pomeranian – two small breeds of dog with big hearts and histories. We’ll dive into both breeds’ temperaments, histories, and current popularity levels to give you an idea of where the Corgi Pomeranian mix came from and how it might fit into your family life.
The History of the Pomeranian
Starting with the Pomeranian. This small dog (standing less than 12 inches tall) was bred originally in the Pomerania region of Germany – a small strip of land that runs along the German/Polish border – Pomeranians haven’t a very long recorded history – with the earliest mentioned being a note in 1764 when Scottish traveler James Boswell noted a “Frenchman with his Pomeranian” in a book he was writing.
Two Pomeranians were brought to England in 1767 by Queen Charlotte, consort of King George III. Charlotte and George raised the two Pomeranians, and Queen Charlotte’s granddaughter, Queen Victoria, would later become fond of the breed, keeping her own kennel.
In the modern era, Pomeranians are two of three dogs to survive the sinking of the Titanic and were registered as a breed by the American Kennel Club in 1898.
How Popular Are Pomeranians?
Pomeranians have been steadily growing in popularity in recent years. Their fluffy coats, friendly demeanor, and otherwise sweet personalities have made them steadfast family pets.
In 2021, Pomeranians were the 24th most popular breed in the United States, most likely due to their sweet nature and small size. This small size also means they’re classified as a toy breed.
Who Are Pomeranians a Good Dog For?
Because of the Pomeranian’s small size, they’re a fantastic family pet and can lead a happy life with elderly people and those living in apartments. Pomeranians are typically gentle with children and friendly with strangers and other dogs, making them excellent companion dogs.
It’s worth noting that your Pom may suffer from separation anxiety – which can be mitigated and alleviated with positive reinforcement training rather than admonishment. Just something to be aware of if you live alone and intend to leave your Pomeranian alone for hours at a time.
How Did Pomeranians Come About?
Pomeranians were first recorded in 1764 by Scottish traveler James Boswell in a diary of his travels, where he noted a Frenchman who had a Pomeranian as a pet.
Britain was first introduced to the Pomeranian in 1767 when Princess Charlotte of Germany imported a Pomeranian before she became Queen Charlotte and the wife of King George III.
Queen Charlotte’s granddaughter, Queen Victoria, began keeping her own kennel of Pomeranians. Pomeranians remain royal dogs today and remain loyal companion pets.
When Did First Cross-Breed The Pomeranian?
Like many hybrid breeds, the Pomeranian was likely crossed many times throughout its history, though there are few records of such crossbreeding.
In more recent years, the Pomeranian – owing much to its popularity as a family pet, has been one of the favorites of breeders to produce hybrid puppies.
Among some of the most popular crossbreeds are Shiranians (Pomeranian Shih Tzu), Pomapoos (Pomeranian Poodles), and Jackapom (Jack Russell Terrier Pomeranian).
The History of the Corgi
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi’s history dates back to the 1100s when they first arrived on Welsh shores with their Flemish owners, who migrated from modern-day Belgium to the Welsh countryside.
At the time, the Flemish were primarily farmers who used the Corgis as a herding breed, despite their small size. Unlike the Pomeranian, Welsh Corgis have a single coat and aren’t meant for harsh weather conditions.
Over time, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi would become full-time companion pets of the everyday Briton, especially British royalty. They would become the favorite dogs of Queen Elizabeth II and Queen Mother. Queen Elizabeth II was rarely seen without her beloved dogs.
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi was recognized as a breed by the American Kennel Club in 1934. So, too, was the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, who, before 1934, had been recognized as the same breed as the Pembroke Welsh. The Cardigan Welsh Corgi has similar origins in Wales but is most commonly thought to have been developed in the Cardigan region of Wales, hence the name.
To conform with the breed standard, somewhat strangely, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi will often have its tail docked when it is between 2 and 5 days old.
How Popular Are Corgis?
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi was first brought to the United States in the early 20th century, but the AKC first recognized it in 1934.
As a recognized breed, the AKC began tracking both the Pembroke Welsh and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi’s popularity. The Pembroke Welsh would fare better on American shores.
It would also lead to the crossbreeding of the Pembroke and Cardigan Welsh Corgis to create an “American Corgi” – which, among the crossbreeding community, is something of a faux pas within the breed.
Nevertheless, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi remains popular with all kinds of owners. According to the AKC, it was the 11th most popular dog in the country in 2021. Meanwhile, the Cardigan Welsh ranked 67th.
Who Are Corgis a Good Dog For?
This happy-go-lucky breed with a protective nature is the perfect match for an active family. Corgis are often said to be little dogs with huge personalities, which is mainly accurate! Because of their size and easygoing nature, Corgis are often chosen as apartment-dwelling pets – which they excel at. They’re also chosen as pets for the elderly for their low-maintenance, calm nature.
All in all, Corgis make adorable companions for almost any household and are always smiling and happy! The only exception may be for those with children – Corgis are naturally a herding breed and may try to ‘herd’ your kids, which can be a fall hazard.
How Did Corgis Come About?
Corgis were first brought to the United Kingdom by Flemish weavers in the 1100s and used initially as cattle herding dogs. They are known for their agility, speed, and ability to get underfoot of cattle and ‘nip’ at their heels.
Corgis are also known for their loyalty, easygoing nature, friendliness, and moderate energy levels.
When Did First Cross-Breed The Corgi?
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi isn’t only one of the most popular purebred dogs. It’s also one of the most popular for mixed-breeding of dogs as well!
Though we don’t know exactly when the first instance of crossbreeding occurred with Pembroke Welsh Corgis – they do date back to the 12th century, after all – one of the most notable instances was the creation of the Dorgi – or Dachshund Corgi, which was the creation of Queen Elizabeth II! She allowed one of her famous Pembroke Welsh Corgi to be crossed with her sister’s favorite Dachshund to create the Dorgi mix!
Some popular Corgi mixes include the subject of today’s article: the Pomeranian Corgi, Chihuahua Corgi, Husky Corgi, and Pitbull Corgi mix. Another curious Corgi mix is a German Shepherd Corgi mix.
