Updated on:

The German Shepherd Maltese Mix, also referred to as the GSM, is a designer mix of one purebred German Shepherd and one purebred Maltese. This crossbreed dog is not yet very popular but it’s gaining more attention due to its cute appearance.

This breed was first bred in Germany by crossing the purebred German Shepherds with the Toy (or Miniature) variety of Maltese. It then arrived in America where it became a favorite among people who like small dogs and big dogs.

So let’s discover how will look like your pet if you get this breed: The outer coat will be long and prickly like that of a normal Shepherd while its undercoat can be soft or may be well developed. It can be a mix of fawn, dark brown, cream and white colors.

Its height will be from 10 to 14 inches from the ground while its weight may vary from 9 to 18 pounds depending on whether it is a female or a male.

Coat types

The German Shepherd Maltese Mix can have one of these two coat types: Harsh and stiff A soft long hair As you can see the GSM has a bark that sounds more like a toy dog bark rather than an adult large breed. It also has a similar temperament found in both parent breeds. Your GSM can be friendly, lively, loyal and even protective when needed so this makes it a good watchdog. On the other hand, it loves being around children because of their playful nature and since it doesn’t like being left alone you will always find it with your kids. But don’t leave it unsupervised in an area where they can reach small objects or foods that they may swallow because the GSM has the tendency to be overprotective of its home and family.

As far as health problems go, this breed is generally healthy but some dogs may develop allergic reactions when exposed to certain things in their environment such as pollen or dust mites so keep them away from these irritants if recommended by your Vet. Also keep in mind that Maltese are prone to having eye infections so you should clean their eyes regularly especially when living in an area with cold weather since this is known for drying out the eyes.

If you want a calm and playful dog then the German Shepherd Maltese mix is a good choice for you. Also you should not have problems with its training as it has a very smart nature. Its coat will require only little amounts of grooming so this makes it an easy to maintain breed. So if you are looking for a dog that looks like a cute living teddy bear then get your hands on the GSM!

Pups

People often get more than one of these breeds, and the combination is called a designer breed.

There are MANY variations on this main concept: 4-5 breeds such as Maltese, Jack Russell Terrier, Poodle, and mixed spaniel. Some examples of mixes between 2 breeds are Chihuahua + Boston Terrier = Chi-Zu or Maltese + Basset Hound = Malthead. Many people don’t even know that the Dachshund is a mixture, and some don’t even think about it! It was originally bred for badger hunting with other dogs in Germany. Another example of a mix is Labradoodle, which combines Labrador Retriever and Standard P (usually). The same goes with the Goldendoodle.

People are often afraid to mix breeds, but it can be very rewarding! Maltese German Shepherd Mix puppies are good looking, easy to train, and very smart dogs. They also have a great sense of humor! Perfect for families or people living alone. These designer mixes are becoming increasingly common around the world because they’re cute, well behaved dogs that can live in small spaces & apartments. That’s why many people want them as pets for Maltese German Shepherd Mix Puppies .

There are health concerns with these breeding practices. You should research each breed carefully before deciding if this is what you really want. Do not take “mixing breeds” lightly, even if you have already owned purebreds in the past. You should ask your Vet about any health concerns that may exist, and do a lot of research before deciding on a breed mix!

Buyers beware:

When you buy from puppy mills or back-yard breeders, there is no way to know if the parents were properly screened for hereditary diseases. In addition, quality dogs are NOT cheap. A high quality Maltese German Shepherd mix is going to cost at least $400-$500 in most places around the world. Be very careful what you pay for a designer dog… If you find a puppy for too low a price, it is most likely because the dogs have not been very well bred.

All dogs have some kind of genetic predisposition towards specific health conditions that can be either mild or severe. Dogs with small and/or large features, such as the Maltese and German Shepherd.

What does a Maltese and German shepherd mix look like?

Well, when it comes to the question what does a Maltese and German shepherd mix looks like, there are many things that you need to take into consideration. It is important for you to understand that when such crossbreeding takes place, then all sorts of different coats and colors can be produced. For example, when we look at these two breeds in particular, we see that they both have very distinctive coats. The German shepherd has a coat which contains very distinctive black and brown tones and markings. It also stands out in terms of its color because its hair is often quite long in the areas where it covers the legs and jawline.

On the other hand, we see that the Maltese is white with either or brown spots on parts of its coat or face. It is because of this that it can often be difficult to get the exact color that will come out when two breeds are mixed together to create a breed of dog known as a Maltese German shepherd mix. When these two dogs are crossbred, then their coat colors will usually vary depending on how dominant the genes of each breed in question are.

However, it is important for you to understand that when this sort of mix does occur, there is every chance that various different types of coats will result. To give you an example, your mix may well end up having markings which look like tidbits and spots all over its face and body; in short, the markings could end up looking like those which you see on a Dachshund.

However, it is also possible for the coat of the puppy to end up looking completely white with no markings at all; in this case, your puppy may well end up looking much like any other cute little Maltese mix out there on the market today. It is important for you to keep in mind that when two dogs are mixed together, then the chances are good that their color will be influenced by one particular breed more than the other; however, it could come down to which genes are dominant.

To give you an example, if one parent were to possess genes which make its coat quite dark or black in color while its partner was responsible for the lighter shades of brown which this breed typically has, then your puppy will probably end up with a coat that is much darker than what you would expect to see on either the Maltese or German shepherd.

No matter what variation comes out in the color of your pup though, it is always important for you to remember that one thing remains certain; these pups are always destined to have long coats which require plenty of attention and grooming to make sure they don’t get tangled or matted up throughout the day. If you are looking for a dog who has a short coat, then you might find that crossing two breeds together is not right for you.

However, if having an incredibly cute little pup who needs lots of attention appeals to you more, then it is more than likely that this is the perfect choice. So long as you are willing to do everything in your power to keep these dogs groomed and in good condition, then there really isn’t any reason why you cannot enjoy having a crossbreed dog such as the Maltese German shepherd mix.

Maltese mixed breeds

In the current study, we aimed to assess coat characteristics of dogs from Malta through a colorimetric method. In particular, information was gathered on color and proportionality of Maltese dogs, as these appear to be preferred features in relation with their role as companion animals.

Colorimetry was carried out on a total of 40 Maltese dogs obtained from different owners. The following variables were studied: a) bichromatic points (B); b) color intensity (C); c) lightness (L *); d) saturation (a*); e) yellowness-redness index (b*). A 5 cm2 area of hair from each dog’s neck was imprinted onto standard paper and used as an experimental surface for the colorimetric analysis.

The Maltese dog (PBGV) and the Coton de Tulear (PHCG) were chosen as references for comparison with Maltese dogs because they show similar coat characteristics.

Many different colors were found in Maltese dogs, especially black and white spots; also different proportions of body parts were detected (e.g., shorter/longer legs). This is the first study on coat color of Maltese dogs using a physical method such as colorimetry, thus providing owners and breeders with quantitative information not only on expected colors but also on their variability within breeds. The results obtained can be used to identify those colors that are preferred by breeders to promote conservation of rare or shy colors, as well as to distinguish Maltese dogs from Coton de Tulear and PBGV.

The present study suggests that colorimetry is a useful tool in evaluating coat colors and, thus, it can be used as a complementary method in the assessment of dog breeds based on morphology.
